Ceiling Storage Hoist Systems
With a ceiling hoist system for storage, you can easily add the ability to lift and lower your kayak canoe or paddleboard for ease of use when trying to maneuver in the garage, shed, or other large flat surfaces. These ceiling hoists are easy to set up and can be easily used to make water activities wider.

What is a ceiling hoist?

Ceiling Hoists are a type of equipment that are utilized to lift items from ground level to an elevated height for example for storage. They can be useful for kayak canoe paddleboard surfboard storage and allow you to move your heavy items up high so that you have more space on the floor below them (and use less storage). The garage pulley system makes storing big recreational equipment easier by enabling you to store larger objects above the head height where there would otherwise not be enough room.

Ceiling hoists are also known as ceiling lifts or ceiling cranes and can be used for storage kayaks, canoes, fishing boats, paddleboards, or surfboards.

How do ceiling hoists work?

Hoists lift, store and secure your boat with the robust pulley system with a brake so you can hang your kayak, paddleboard, or surfboard up high. Ceiling hooks attach to the ceiling joists and are secured with lag bolts for added stability.

How to use ceiling hoist to hang canoe in garage?

The first step is to connect your boat or equipment so that it is securely attached to a safe position.

The pulley system is then attached to the boat and tightened down before raising it to its desired height by turning the winch handle until all slack has been taken out of rope and achieve the desired position. A padlock secures the unit once locked but allows easy release when needed by rotating the key back-and-forth through two openings located on the top side. Use a safety locking mechanism to lock a boat on a ceil.

Ceiling hoists can be used to store boats, kayaks, paddleboards, etc. up high so you have more floor space below them in your shed or garage.

Tip: ceiling hook should go in a hole that is at least six inches from the edge of the joist or it will not securely fit into place.

Types of garage ceiling storage lift systems

There are two types of storage ceiling hoists - manual and electric.

Manual ceiling hoist

Manually operated kayak hoists, also known as manual hoists, require a person to exert energy with their fingers by manipulating the moving ropes. In order to use it correctly, it's advisable that you gain enough strength in your upper body or enlist the help of a friend.

One of the major advantages of a manual kayak hoist is its cost-effectiveness. They are cheaper than an electric system and can be installed practically anywhere. This can be handy for in-door usage as there's no need for running power lines into it.

Electric ceiling hoist

It’s a model that is powered by electricity. The electric ceiling hoists are usually operated with remote control and, depending on the make and model, can be programmed to move up or down according to a timer (such as each hour)

The most significant advantage of an electrical kayak hoist is its versatility. It's easier for someone who doesn't have the upper body strength to operate one since all they need to do is activate it using a switch. Another perk would be comfort - it has no potential danger in terms of manual labor.

However, there are some disadvantages to this type of ceiling hoist system too: firstly, they're considerably more expensive than manually-operated ones; secondly, you'll need access points.

2 point or 4 point pulley lift system

A key difference between a 2-point pulley lift and a 4-point pulley lift is the ceiling attachment system. The two-point ceiling attachments are fixed points, while on a four-point ceiling lift they're movable hooks that can be adjusted to an appropriate height for your specific needs.

This means you'll need more space between the floor and the ceiling with the latter type of system because it requires four new holes in order to work - one for each hook (forming an X).

What is the best type of kayak lift for the garage?

The electrical hoist system is more functional.

Therefore the best model of storage garage ceiling hoist depends on how you plan on using it and your budget constraints as well as what features you prefer (ease or cost). If money isn't something that bothers you much then go with the electrical model because it'll allow you to have more possibilities.

What size of ceiling hoist do I need for my garage?

The kayak ceiling hoist size you need for your garage is determined by the height of the ceiling. If it's too high, then the hoists will not be possible to use. If this happens, an alternative would be a lifter basket or winch-type apparatus which is attached below the ceiling and lifts heavy items into place on cables stretched from overhead supports.

If you have ordinary ceilings that are less than 12 feet in height, we recommend using an electric chain block kit with the attachable pulley and hook as it'll help save time because the lifting mechanism will do all work rather than manual labor. Otherwise, if your ceiling has greater height - like more than 18 feet - then consider choosing a hydraulic model instead since the cable isn't very practical at higher heights.

What is the best size of kayak hanging system?

It depends on ceiling height. Most kayak lifts are mounted to the ceiling and they're typically rated for ceilings 12-14 feet high, but you may need a larger model if your ceiling is higher than that.

The best size depends on ceiling height so most people will use an electric chain block kit when the maximum floor to ceiling distance is shorter or a hydraulic one if the height is longer.

How do I benefit from a kayak ceiling hoist?

Kayak storage hoist gives some benefits.

  • Save space. It takes up less room than a rack because it is installed on the ceiling.
  • Easy to assemble and install. You only need an electric drill or screwdriver depending on what type you buy, which means that you won't have any problems installing one in your garage without hiring someone else to do it for you.
  • Holds heavy items - most kayak lift systems can hold over 300lbs per side! This doesn't mean all models are designed for storing kayaks though so make sure to choose the right size for boating equipment you plan on putting there (most people use them with bikes only). Some models are even rated at 600 pounds making them perfect for storage some boats at the same time.

What are the drawbacks of garage hoist system?

  1. It can be a bit pricey because of the unique design. The good thing is that they are easy to install, and you don't need to hire anyone else for them!
  2. They might not work in all garages due to height restrictions of ceilings.
  3. They need some space on a floor to lift down a kayak or boat.
  4. They are not a good idea if you have a low ceiling, because they will be hard to operate.
  5. The cost is higher than most other types of garage storage solutions for boats or kayaks (unless you go with something cheaper that doesn't offer features like being able to lift heavy items). Installers typically charge an additional fee too which may turn some people off from these models altogether.

Is ceiling hoist for kayak storage worth it?

The garage hoist storage system is worth it if you have a quite high ceiling, are not limited by the length of your ceiling rafters. But it requires plenty of clearance on your floor for lifting down kayaks or boats when needed and only cost more than other models if you go with something really cheap that doesn't offer features like being able to lift heavy items. If these criteria fit in with what you're looking for then this garage storage solution might be perfect for you.

What materials do hoist pulley system come in?

The ceiling hoist materials are typically made out of galvanized steel in order to be more heavy-duty and durable construction.

What is the best place for boat ceiling hoist on a shed or garade?

A ceiling hoist can help organize and store your boats or boards in a shed or garage by providing storage space in an unused location, above their head for items that would otherwise take up valuable floor space on the ground below. It should be placed at a height of about 13 feet high with the rope coming down to your work area.

Do you plan on installing the garage hoist storage system yourself?

Ceiling hoists installation is not difficult to do, however, it may take some time.

If you are not comfortable with storage hoist installation, then it is best to hire a professional for the job.

To install an electrical hoist we recommend hiring a licensed electrician who has experience working in high ceilings and will know how to safely install your ceiling cable without any risks of getting harmed or electrocuted.

Garage storage pulley system installing

If you are installing kayak lift for garage yourself, then it is important that the following steps be taken to ensure safety:

  • wear gloves and protective clothing before handling ceiling cable;
  • use a step ladder or scaffolding when working in ceiling area;
  • make sure ceiling cables can move freely

Key facts for boat/kayak/canoe pulley system

Space

Would a ceiling hoist work in your garage? If you have a small garage and don’t want to waste space, then getting one of the kayak ceiling hoists would be the right choice.

When choosing a hoist system you must make sure that it is in the correct length for your vehicle.

With that being said, if the ceiling is not tall enough for the installation of a garage ceiling hoist, or is too weak to support its weight comfortably - there are other options available such as wall-mounted racks or stand-alone racks.

Ceiling Height

To ensure proper installation, make sure that enough space from the bottom of your ceiling rafters (or where your ceiling joists meet) is available for access underneath them as well as above them to mount the hardware.

If you cannot find a place with at least this space, it's better to think about the ceiling or wall racks.

Lift system

There are two types of hoist systems: manual or electrical.

  • Manual hoists are inexpensive and easy to use. You attach a strap, or pulley system, which is attached to the ceiling beam with some hooks, and then you can lift your boat by pulling on this hand-operated rope. Another option for manual ceiling hoists is ceiling racks where you place these straps around your tires instead of attaching them from above.
  • Electrical hoists will provide more convenience when it comes to lifting your boat up since all that needs to be done is pressing a button rather than exerting physical effort (besides simply holding onto the wire). It makes raising kayaks simpler – no need for any additional help beyond just one person so if there’s only one person available, this hoist will come in very handy.

With these models, you can easily raise your kayaks up to the ceiling and then store them upside down above each other. This storage method is really convenient because it frees up a lot of space on the ground so if there’s no place for parking outside or inside of the building where these boats are going to be stored, these systems could do wonders.

Tip: As with any type of equipment when lifting heavy objects such as kayaks, one should always make sure their safety gear (i.e., harness) is properly secured.

Assembly and set up

Ceiling hoist installing process is not difficult, but you need to know the ceiling height and ceiling joists size.

Usually ceiling hoists are delivered with the installation instructions, but in case of any doubt – a company representative will be happy to answer all your questions.

Experts recommend that you hire an electrician for assembly purposes, as they typically have more experience and knowledge about electrical wiring than most people do.

As far as safety precautions go, it is always important to have enough space around the mechanical unit for additional safety.

Installation time also varies depending on where you mount the mechanism - joists are usually easier.

In order to mount the pulley lift system, you'll need a few tools: a cordless drill (or screwdriver), screws, or nails that are appropriate for your ceiling material. Once this is done, all you have to do is find two sturdy beams and connect them together with wood pieces of equal size as spacers. Then use braces to keep everything stable on both sides while installing the electric wiring - now it's ready! The last step in the installation is hooking up the wires into a power outlet near where they will be mounted.

Tie-down straps

Hoist straps are usually secured to ceiling joists with a screwdriver, which allows for quick installation.

Otherwise, you can use tape or ratchet tie-down strap if they're not too long. Make sure that the ceiling hook is in accordance with ceiling height: ceiling hooks should be positioned according to ceiling height and will hold any weight up to 1000 pounds (i.e., 20 feet).

Weight capacity

A very important consideration when purchasing a kayak storage hoist is to know the weight capacity of your system. Most systems can lift between 100-150 pounds, so you can find one that matches up with or exceeds your boat’s weight.

Apart from the kayak’s weight, you’ll need to make sure not to exceed the pulley lift system load-bearing capacity before installing. The rope can also be a culprit if it causes excessive tension that adversely impacts the mounting surface and its contents with disastrous results.

Power source

Your ceiling storage lift will need a power outlet to run the motor. This is often supplied by an extension cord or can be plugged into an exterior wall socket. The advantage of this setup is that you can plug it in anywhere, so if something goes wrong with one wire then it’s easy enough to swap out for another and keep going.

Mounting location

Generally speaking, the ceiling height should be at least 12 feet high to have room for overhead clearance when operating the ceiling lift system.

Safety

Safety is one of the most important factors when choosing a garage hoist system.

Hoist pulley systems are not designed to be a “one-man job”!

Kayak garage hoist could cause serious injury through falls or malfunctions!

Therefore, before proceeding with the installation process make sure your ceiling is high enough and that you have somebody else around who can help out in case something goes wrong. And never ever work while standing on an elevated surface like scaffolding as this increases the risk of falling from height. Make sure all cords and cables remain clear from any obstacles and are out of reach, use safety gloves to increase a firm grip but remove them before operating machinery.

Durability

Durability is also one of the ceiling hoist’s main advantages. Smaller ropes, cables, and pulleys are less likely to snag on something or break than with traditional methods. This means that most models will last a lot longer before needing repairs or replacement parts, saving you money in the long run!

Note: Durability does not refer to how well it lifts things up but its ability to stay intact for years without breaking down.

Safety locking mechanism

The hoist works by a pulley system that is secured with a safety locking mechanism, making it easy to raise and safely store. It's perfect for ceiling heights up to 12 feet.

Note: safety locking mechanism refers to the way you can safely lock the storage hoist in place and prevent it from dropping anything

Rubber coated hooks

The ceiling storage hoist is a great investment if you need to store your boat or kayak somewhere but can't find the right place. It's also perfect for use in garages! The ceiling-mounted heavy-duty canoe hoist will save you money in the long run with its durable, easy movement and safety locking mechanism. Rubber-coated hooks are used to prevent scratches on your board when they're being stored with this device.

Material

The most common material for this product is heavy-duty steel because it's important for it to be durable and of premium quality for maximum safety.

Frequency of use

The most often you're going to use your hoist, the more quality materials it must be made of.

It'll save you money in the long run with its durable, easy movement and safety locking mechanism.

Clearance

The ceiling clearance is necessary in order to move the ceiling hoist for a variety of tasks.

If you plan to store your kayak in an elevated position above other items, always check the clearance of your garage ceiling storage lift system before purchasing.

Most kayak hoists hang down from the ceiling by several feet and the last thing you want is to be scraping your car’s paint job on the rudder of your kayak.

The clearance of the ceiling height on your storage ceiling hoist must have at least 12 feet of overhead clearance.

Attachment strength

The average kayak weighs between 30 and 70 pounds.

Your boat ceiling hoist should be able to support at least 150 pounds.

If you plan on attaching a couple of boats or boards, the canoe garage hoist must have at least a 300-pound capacity.

The attachments are usually more than 50% of the total weight of your ceiling hoist system. Attachments like heavy boats may need an additional attachment point for security purposes.

Versatility

Ceiling hoist is a versatile system because it can use for multiple purposes. It can be used to haul not only boats but any other heavy objects. It is a good idea to have a ceiling storage lift in your garage or shed.

The manual ceiling hoist system is also easy to install which makes it more practical than many alternatives on the market today. You will not need an electrician or carpenter for installation because all you need are some basic tools like a drill and screwdriver.

Pros: kayak ceiling hoists are versatile systems that are suitable for any type of load without needing additional attachment points, making them perfect for garages where overhead clearance may be limited as well as DIYers who want something quick to install with minimal required skill level needed.

How to care about ceiling storage lift?

Most often, ceiling hoists are not used daily but rather have more intermittent use so that means over time the materials can get weaker which could lead to accidents or falls if proper maintenance is not performed. Ceiling mounted devices should last anywhere from twenty years up until forty depending on how much they're put into rotation per day. There are some steps to care about them:

  • Check the cables regularly to be sure that they are not frayed or otherwise damaged.
  • Make sure to check connections and components such as ceiling brackets, pulleys, hooks, cable drums, and sheaves for damage.
  • Inspect the ceiling hook mounting spot regularly for signs of wear or deterioration.
  • Measure out a drop test periodically where you hang an object equal in weight to your canoe pulley system from the ceiling at least six times. If it has any sign of sag then it is time to replace the cables.

Important tips to using for storage ceiling hoist system

  • Garage hoist storage should be installed by ceiling hooks that are screwed into ceiling joists.
  • The cables coming from the ceiling hook must reach a ceiling bracket, pulley, or another attachment point on the underside of the beam at least 12 inches away from where you want your ceiling hoist to hang down.
  • Ceiling brackets and sheaves can be found at hardware stores, home improvement centers.
  • All metal components may require lubrication including cable drums (use WD40), pulleys, and bolts which have been especially hard with time.
  • Check for damage regularly, replace if needed soon after it starts showing signs of wear and tear.

  • pull the hoist down to the floor;
  • depending on the type of the hoist, put your kayak on straps or hang on rubber-coated hooks and fix them;
  • use a pulley system to pull it to the ceiling;
  • tighten hoist to ceiling, and use a rope or chain strap through ceiling hooks for better grip.

How to hang a canoe on a garage ceiling?

To hang a canoe on a garage ceiling you need to use the hoist. It can be useful in many situations - shed or garage ceiling storage or home storage. You may need a specific type of hoist pulley system to meet your needs. For example, you will want an electric ceiling hoist if you're using the device more often or on heavier items; you'll need a marine-grade ceiling hoist for boats that require special care like sun protection; and so on.

Tip: some models offering up to 400 pounds of weight capacity.

How to attach a pulley to a ceiling?

If you need a hoist storage system for your garage ceiling, attaching a pulley to the ceiling can be an effective solution.

Tip: make sure that the load-bearing points are high enough off the ground so they will clear any obstructions (or other items) which might interfere with their movement when weight is added to them by way of a suspended object such as a canoe, kayak, fishing boat, or anything else.

How do you store a canoe at home?

A kayak garage hoist can be used to store a canoe in your ceiling. The ceiling can be easily turned into the ideal storage space for all of your outdoor gear and equipment with very little effort on behalf of you, the homeowner.

Kayak hanging systems provide excellent protection from dust, heat, and other possible exterior influences that could make these items deteriorate prematurely if not protected appropriately.

Tip: If using ceiling hooks to suspend objects from ceiling beams; attach them so there is an unobstructed clearance zone at least six inches below each hook point and also twelve inches above it.

How to hang multiple kayaks or boats?

There are kayak pulley storage models for two kayaks or boats. But to use this model you need to be sure that your ceiling is able to support the ceiling hoist's weight. You will just want to ensure that they have been installed correctly with all of the necessary hardware such as straps and hooks before loading them up with heavy cargo.

How to secure a pulley?

Attach ceiling hooks or anchors to ceiling joists with the appropriate hardware and cable lengths.

Keep a 12" clearance zone from any obstructions on both sides of the pulley point, where it attaches to the ceiling's structure. This is important; if you do not have an unobstructed area around your electric kayak hoist when suspending loads, then you will need to get new installation points for proper loading. Your safety depends on following these directions carefully!

Tip: A good idea would be to measure twice before installing anything into ceiling beams in order (to ensure that there are no unforeseen issues). And make sure all bolts are tightened securely every time you mount something using hinges or joints - this prevents accidents and injuries due to falling.

How do you lift with a pulley?

A ceiling hoist is a great storage system that lifts the equipment to the ceiling of your shed or garage. When doing so, your garage storage pulley system will serve as the pulley.

A kayak garage hoist can be integrated with a chain and hook system: this is often referred to as "tackle." To lift using a storage hoist, attach one end of the tackle into the ceiling hoist’s lifting arm or hook. Then tie other hooks onto any part of the load you wish to lift - most commonly it would be the rope that has been looped through eyelets on equipment.

How to hoist a kayak to the ceiling?

Hoist helps with pulling the kayak to the ceiling for storage. To hoist it you need a garage storage pulley system, ceiling lift chain, and ceiling hook. First, attach the ceiling hoist to the ceiling using ceiling hooks and lifting arm then tie the kayak onto it with a rope through eyelets on equipment.

A ceiling hoist is an apparatus usually used for raising or lowering heavy objects that are supported from the ceiling by ropes or chains so as not to put any strain on them while they are in use. Ceiling lifts are often referred to as "tackle" because they work similarly to pulleys that utilize two ropes attached at one end only.

Apart from kayak hoists and lift systems, you also have a few other options to consider for storing your kayaks using standing racks, wall-mounted racks, wall-mounted sling sets, or ceiling racks.

  1. During the off season, I’m seeking for a wall mounted rack system to store my Passport 12.0s. Any ideas?

    1. For around 7 years, I’ve used the Malone “JDock” for extra wall-mounted boat storage. They’re rated for 200 pounds total, so two Passport hulls will not be an issue, and the lower sling-style attachments with cam buckle webbing straps make loading and unloading from the floor a breeze even for a kid. There are many alternative choices available these days, but this is the model that seemed to best fit my needs and I haven’t been disappointed!

I’ve found that the Harken “Hoister” overhead storage lifts are a good fit for my larger Hobie hulls because I don’t have much free wall space, and the installation is more challenging. However, it may also be an excellent choice as your fleet grows or you may want to load/unload directly from a car. I hope this information is useful!
