How to Use Outboard Motor Earmuffs Properly

Posted by Author David Lee

Using outboard motor earmuffs, also known as flush muffs, is a straightforward process. Here’s a step-by-step guide:

1. Attach the Hose to the Earmuffs: Connect your garden hose to the earmuffs. Most earmuffs have a simple screw fitting that matches a standard garden hose.

2. Position the Earmuffs Correctly: The earmuffs should be positioned over the water intakes on your outboard motor, which are usually located on the sides of the lower unit (the gearbox part of the motor that sits in the water). The rubber cups of the earmuffs should cover these intakes entirely to ensure a proper flow of water.

3. Secure the Earmuffs: Ensure that the earmuffs are secure. Many models come with a metal rod that allows you to adjust the width of the earmuffs and secure them in place. Make sure they’re tight enough to stay in place but not so tight that they damage the casing of the motor.

4. Turn on the Water: Before you start your engine, turn the water on. The water pressure should be sufficient to allow water to flow through the muffs and into the cooling system of the motor, but it shouldn’t be so high that it causes the muffs to blow off or the hose to kink.

5. Start the Engine: Once the water is flowing, start your outboard motor. You should see water coming out of the “tell-tale” (a small hole on the side of the motor), indicating that water is flowing through the cooling system. If you don’t see this, immediately shut off the motor and check your setup.

6. Run the Engine: Let the engine run for about 10-15 minutes. This should be enough time to flush out any salt, sand, or other debris from the cooling system.

7. Shut Down: After flushing, turn off the engine first, then turn off the water. Remove the muffs and disconnect the hose.

Remember, always follow the manufacturer’s instructions when using earmuffs to flush your outboard motor. Some newer motors have built-in flushing systems and may not require the use of earmuffs.
