You see, if you’re on an expedition down the Grand Canyon that you’re going to hit some big water, your kayak needs a lot of buoyancy. It also needs to take abuse. And finally, if you’re going to do some tricks, you need a combination of tough and light and strong, and a somewhat lower buoyancy. Now, I have boats for all of those things, but today we’re looking at the science behind these two materials, plastic and composite.

To get me started, I’m visiting a polymer scientist.

I’m trying to figure out where we’re going. Given that this is a university, I don’t think this looks all that odd.

I brought with me one of my plastic boats so that she could help explain what goes into the design, specifically from the materials perspective.

So, plastics can be very, very different. They can be really tough like these kayaks, they can be really brittle like plexiglass, and sort of anything in between, and they can be goo like silly putty, and they’re all polymers and that’s one of the reasons why they’re used so much.

In fact, this whole topic involves understanding polymers and how those polymers fold onto each other.

Polymers are basically long chains of molecules. As you can see here, if this bead represents the size of two water molecules, then this string is the size of the polymers in this boat. Together, it’s a bit like a tangled spaghetti soup.

If I pull it, the chains can slide back and forth on each other.

And that’s why for certain purposes these plastic boats are great. It has elasticity because as it gets compressed, or pressure is added to the plastic, these polymers slowly move past one another and then can pull back into shape. It doesn’t break. Now, composite boats are different.

It’s bad if you run into something with this kind of boat because it will break, potentially. Have a look at the tail, it’s leaking.

To be clear, composite boats are made of a combination of fiberglass and carbon cloth, mixed with a resin.

Filler is the fiber and the fabric, and the matrix is the resin.

In these, we’re still talking about polymers, but instead of it acting like a spaghetti soup, everything is covalently bonded to each other and cross-linked, forming a really strong crystalline structure.

And before we wrap up, let’s look how both boats are formed.

How they’re made.

Now, plastic kayaks are formed in a factory, like this one. They’re made in a giant warehouse and it all starts with little beads like this. They put those beads into a roto-mold, and then those molds are put into a furnace, heated up, spun around so the polymers are spread all around the kayak, and when they come out of the furnace, they’re cooled down to make the boats we use.

She also explained that composite boats are different. They’re made with a cloth-like this, which is actually just fiberglass or carbon fiber, and then that is actually coated in an epoxy resin. And unlike plastic boats, these carbon fiber, or fiberglass boats, will never change back into their original material.

The difference between types of Plastic reinforcement — Carbon fiber, Kevlar, Fiberglass, Royalex Materials

Plastic is material consisting of any of a wide range of synthetic or semi-synthetic organic comlbs that are malleable and so can be molded into solid boats. Plastic can be divided in two main materials:

  • polyethylene that is much less rigid and tends to hold up better in cold temperatures and
  • polypropylene that is much more lightweight, stronger, durable, sturdier and is resistant to chemicals and organic solvents.

For plastic can be used three common reinforcements: fiberglass, carbon fiber, and Kevlar.

Carbon fiber and Kevlar — is a heat-resistant and strong synthetic fiber. It is a distant relative of nylon or superpolyamide. Their main features:

  • From a practical standpoint and aside from the obvious color difference, Kevlar is more abrasion- and impact-resistant than carbon fiber. Kevlar usually positioned internally in all areas of stress in carbon hulls (carbon-kevlar Hybrids). Kevlar hulls are more visible on the water. Kevlar boats are less expensive than carbon fiber boats because the material costs less.
  • Carbon fiber is much easier to tool than Kevlar, so it can be used in complex canoe’s hulls, which require a lot of sanding and grinding. There isn’t a significant weight difference between these two materials.

Fiberglass (US) or fibreglass (UK) is a common type of fiber-reinforced plastic using glass fiber. It is more flexible than carbon fiber, stronger than many metals by weight, is non-magnetic, non-conductive, transparent to electromagnetic radiation, and is chemically inert under many circumstances.

Royalex is a composite material, comprising an outer layer of vinyl and hard acrylonitrile butadiene styrene plastic (ABS) and an inner layer of ABS foam. layers are bonded by heat treatment. It is used for manufacture of durable, mid-priced canoes and kayaks.

    I would like to give you some information about my Passat G3 Kevlar Kayak by Seaward Kayaks. It’s a very good product for beginners or experienced paddlers seeking lightness and performance.     I have a 10-foot sit-in kayak by Sundolphin company. It is a very lightweight plastic model, not very great for beginners, but I had no problems with paddling around my local lake. It is really easy to put in and out of the water and quite stable getting in and out of it. I am happy with it so much. I recommend this model.

I am looking for a better kevlar kayak right now but don’t have the money to actually get one since I am having to pay for my college right now, and my education is more important than having a better kayak.
